The Rule of Law Education Centre’s informed project is an opportunity for teachers and students to develop understanding, skills, and confidence to protect our democratic values and freedoms effectively. It gives students a framework to debate and wrestle with current issues to safeguard our freedoms and hold those in power to account.
Informed Competition
The Rule of Law Education Centre is inviting students from years 5-10 to create impactful, informative and non-political short videos exploring critical topics in government, rights and responsibilities, democracy and laws in Australia. Student videos will then help inform other students around Australia when their video is featured on our new social media channel and YouTube page!
All students will be awarded either the Rule of Law Education Centre’s Emerging Citizen (years 5-8) or Ready Citizen (years 9-10) certificate. There will also be a special award for the top 5 videos based on the number of views and engagement. Click here to learn more.
Informed Resources
To assist teachers and students, The Rule of Law Education Centre will provide:
- Curriculum-linked questions and topic areas to choose from. These will include topics such as What are rights and responsibilities? What makes a good law? What is a fair trial? What is the purpose of the Constitution? How are rights protected? Democracy versus Totalitarianism.
- Ready to Use Resources for teachers that include an Information Sheet, PowerPoint Pack, and Short Video with a Quiz for each topic area outlining basic knowledge and simple real- world examples to assist linking the civic concepts with lived experiences.
- Short Videos for Social Media Platforms that look at current news areas to provide context and prompts for discussion
We already have 50 schools from all over Australia who have expressed an interest in our pilot!
We need your help.
Help us identify topic areas: We have identified over 100 different curriculum linked topic areas including areas such as the rights and responsibilities of freedom of speech, the role of presumption of innocence in protecting our rights, the importance of property rights and the significance of equality.
We are keen to hear your thoughts on what areas of civic knowledge should be prioritised.
Help us develop more classroom ready resources: For each topic area we need to create a fact sheet, PowerPoint, short explainer video and short current news video.
A donation of $2,000 will help us create a new pack of classroom ready resources for a specific topic area.
